How to Hire the Right Lawyer
ZipCode Lawyer™
offers you access to
experienced attorneys throughout
New York City's five boroughs.
Before
you set out to hire an attorney, please consider the following:
Although there is no such thing
as 'a perfect lawyer,' hiring an attorney to best serve your legal needs shouldn't be a complicated process.
However, just as
you wouldn't go to a cousin for an uncle's advice,
using a
lawyer that is familiar with your type of
legal matter may not
only save you time
and money, but may help ensure your case is
handled the right way; the first time
around.
Important: Just as you'd
expect your work references to be verified by your employer, so
should you verify references of any attorney you may consider
hiring. Hiring an inexperienced attorney
can result in costly delays.
Verifying a lawyers experience by requiring references should
not be frowned upon and should be your requirement before
hiring any attorney.
Play it safe.
Hire an experienced professional.
What to look for in an experienced attorney:
FIRST:
Make sure that the lawyer is registered with
the
NYS Office of Court Administration (OCA), and is
authorized to practice law in the State of New York.
Contact the official licensing/registration unit:
(212) 428-2800 or click the first link on
Google
search results for
Attorney Search.
SECOND:
If meeting with the lawyer outside their office location, request that they bring
some for of identification other than a business card.
Preferably their Attorney [Pocket] ID Card.
THIRD:
Ask the lawyer if he/she has had any complaints
filed
against them with the Bar Association or disciplinary committee. This will
make it known that
you are aware
of their licensing
requirements and your
complaining ability.*
FOURTH:
Be sure you select, from our available categories, the
lawyer category that comes closest to your type of
case.
Then, be sure to
verify their experience
handling legal
proceedings (cases) similar to yours.
